It is with deep sorrow that we announce the passing of our beloved Father, Grandfather and Great-grandfather, Lt. Col. (Rtd) David Wiens, of Ottawa. David passed away peacefully on November 16, 2017 at the Montfort Hospital at the age of 97 years old. He was the son of the late Abraham and Katherina Wiens of Warren, Manitoba and cherished step-mother, the late Maria Schellenberg. Predeceased by his beloved wife of 68 years, Betty (Bagot), beloved son Brian, and his siblings Anne, Abraham, Margaret, Cornelius, Kathe, Laura, Arthur, Frank, Edith, and Maria Theresa. He is survived by his daughter Gail (Ned Segal), daughter-in-law Marion Wiens, grandchildren Carolyn (Chris Sanford), Susan, David Wiens (Michelle), Laura (Scott Manser), Ben Segal (Kristen) and six great grandchildren, Abree, Addison, Berkley, Wyatt, Clara and Kayla. Fondly remembered by many nieces and nephews.
David was educated at St. John’s College, Winnipeg (B.A. 1942). He served in the Canadian Army overseas in the Canadian Intelligence Corps. from 1942-1946 during World War II. He met and married the love of his life, English war bride, Betty Bagot. On return to Canada, David attended the University of Manitoba and obtained a Diploma of Education in 1947. He taught High School at St. John’s College in Winnipeg until August 1950. David rejoined the army and served in various Intelligence Appointments, such as the South East Asian Branch at the Pentagon in Washington, D.C. and Commandant at the Military Intelligence School in Camp Borden. When he retired from the forces, he was employed as a translator with the Department of National Defence in the DGIS Multilingual Section, in which he was promoted Section Chief in 1979.

A Graveside Service will be held at The National Military Cemetery, 280 Beechwood Avenue Wednesday, November 22, 2017 at 3pm. No visitation. Many thanks to the wonderful, management and staff at the Edinburgh Retirement Residence for their care and compassion over nearly seven years. Many thanks to Dr. Lachance and Michelle of the Montfort hospital for their loving care.
