Obituary for John Grassick Reid

John Grassick  Reid
November 1, 1929 – July 18, 2017

John was the eldest son of Edgar Burkitt Reid and Jean Forbes Grassick of Toronto. He was educated at Deer Park Public School and Oakwood Collegiate and Victoria College at the University of Toronto, graduating in honours Geography in 1953. After two years of graduate school at U of T in Planning and Urban Geography, he joined the City of Toronto Planning Board in 1955 as a junior planner. In 1959, he moved to the City of Ottawa’s Planning Branch. He was the first Secretary of the Committee of Adjustment and served as the Director of Planning. In 1973, he joined the City of Gloucester as Director of Planning and later was Commissioner of Planning and Development. He retired in 1993. John married Judith Ethel Nesbitt on September 22, 1956, at Christ Church Cathedral. Judy is the daughter of Rev. Liddon H. Nesbitt and Ethel Lees of Ottawa. He is survived by his beloved wife of 60 years, daughters Susan (Mark Senn), Jill (Malcolm Speirs), Sheila (Ryland Coyne), grandsons Alistair (Anna) and Nicholas Senn, Ryland and Spencer Coyne and Andrew Speirs, and great grandson Apollo Senn. He was predeceased by daughter Jennifer Lees Reid. John and Judy were very involved with the Cathedral and The Minto Skating Club. John was a past President and Life Member of The Minto Club. He was also a former President of the Saint Columba’s Curling Club and a former Secretary Treasurer of the Rockcliffe Lawn Tennis Club. Family and friends are invited to visit at the Central Chapel of Hulse, Playfair & McGarry, 315 McLeod Street (at O’Connor), Ottawa on Thursday, July 20th from 6 – 8 PM. Funeral Service will be held at Christ Church Cathedral, 414 Sparks Street, Ottawa on Friday July 21st at 1 PM. Memorial donations to Christ Church Cathedral, Ottawa or The University of Toronto – The Soldiers Tower would be appreciated.
